Suicide Cleanup
If you are reading this page, someone you love has died, and you have our condolences. Among everything you are carrying right now, the state of the room should not be one of them. Suicide cleanup is a professional service that exists for exactly this moment: trained crews clean and disinfect the space quietly, and you never have to see it as it is now.
Suicide cleanup is the professional cleaning of a home after a suicide, done by trained crews in protective equipment. They remove blood and biohazards, disinfect every affected surface and dispose of waste safely, with complete discretion, so that family members never have to clean the scene of a loved one's death themselves.
Why this should not be done by family
There are two reasons, and both matter. The first is practical: blood and bodily fluids are biohazards. They soak into flooring and furniture, they can carry infection, and cleaning them safely takes protective equipment, professional disinfectants and licensed waste disposal. The second reason is the one families tell us about afterward: cleaning the scene of a loved one's death leaves images that do not fade. People who do it themselves often struggle with that room, and that memory, for years. A crew has no such tie to the space. Let them carry this part.
How the service works
The call
One call, any hour. You will be asked what happened and where, nothing more than the crew needs. If there are things in the room you want saved (photographs, letters, keepsakes), say so on the call and the crew will protect them first.
The cleanup
The crew assesses the space, gives a written quote, then removes affected material, cleans and disinfects every surface the event touched, and treats odor. Depending on the method and the room, blood can spread further than expected, into flooring seams, walls and furniture; the crew checks all of it. Sealed waste leaves with a licensed transporter. Most single room jobs finish the same day.
Afterward
When the work is done, the crew lead walks through what was done, by phone if you prefer, and confirms the room is safe. Many families ask the crew to leave the room plain and empty of reminders; others want furniture returned to place. Either is fine, and the crew follows your lead.
Costs, insurance and support
Typical prices for common situations are on the biohazard cleanup cost page, and every quote follows the same rule: the final price is confirmed by the contractor after seeing the job, in a written quote before work starts. Homeowners insurance covers this service in many cases; see insurance coverage for how claims usually work. If the death involved a crime against your loved one, your state victim compensation program may repay some costs.
If you are supporting someone who is struggling right now, in the United States you can call or text 988 at any time to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. If you are the one struggling, please use it. For the room, and everything practical that follows, call us and we will take it from there.
Questions families ask us
Do I have to see the room before the crew cleans it?
No. You never have to enter the room at all. The crew lead will describe what needs to happen by phone, handle everything, and tell you when the space is clean and safe to enter.
What should I do with personal items in the room?
Tell the crew lead what matters to you: photos, letters, religious items, anything. Anything unaffected is cleaned if possible and set aside for you. The crew checks before disposing of anything that looks personal.
How discreet is the service?
Fully. Crews arrive in unmarked vehicles, wear plain protective clothing without logos at the door where possible, and never discuss the work with neighbors or anyone who asks.
Does insurance cover suicide cleanup?
In many cases, yes. Homeowners policies commonly cover cleanup after a death on the property, including suicide, though some policies have terms that apply in the first one to two years. Our insurance page explains what to ask your insurer.
How fast can a crew come?
Crews respond around the clock and can usually attend the same day. If you are reading this at 3 in the morning, you can still call.
